My ATProtocol Web App Wishlist
I'm a beta for Sakurasora.social, a Bluesky alternative that uses ATProtocol. This means I've been interacting with other ATProto users, mainly Bluesky. Also so far, I've been using the Bluesky web app.
If you know what that means, then you might know where this post is going (눈_눈).
After complaining a bit on my account, I wanted to write a more thorough... not a review but a list of things I would like an ATProto web app to have. A wishlist if you may.
- Email notifications On a previous post about Proton Mail, I described how I was using email to manage notifications from various sites. These include Mastodon, Dreamwidth, Pillowfort, AO3, and lately forums. This method helps me remember actions I have taken or need to take on certain online interactions. Since joining the indie web, this has become a crucial tool to stay organized. So when a social network or site doesn't offer this, I either forget to use it or I become increasingly obsessed with checking it.
This is the case with Discord and Bluesky!!! (ᗒᗣᗕ)՞
- Alt text for profile picture and banner
This issue goes hand to hand with the hard-coded character limit. I don't want to compromise accessibility for a succinct profile description. I want to add alt text to my profile and banner for folks know what they are!
- More native RSS feeds So far, only accounts have RSS feeds. Neither the feed feature nor tags have them. The latter is possible on Mastodon and Tumblr. What if I want to follow an artist's tag on my reader? Can't do it. Can't even follow it on my account (」°ロ°)」.
One imperfect workaround I have seen is that the artist themselves create a feed with their tag but as I wrote, these feeds only work inside the web app.
So yeah, these are my three feature requests for an ATProto web app. Not sure how easy or hard they would be to implement. I believe my wishlist adheres to some of the Small Web values like accessibility and user privacy. I'm writing third during the first week of using Sakurasora.
