Experience with Tumblr vs. Dreamwidth on 2025

Another outdated post from my backlog that still rings true so it's getting posted.

Ngl, having spent spent a lot of time in Tumblr and Dreamwidth (DW) at the same time, it's pretty clear to me how the former is part of Web 2.0, or the rat race of who-is-more-popular for non-indie web folks which makes users addicted to their site for company profit. In contrast to DW where without social interaction such as joining communities, commenting on people's journals, and finding mutuals from other sites, it gets pretty lonely pretty fast.

DW is part of the indie web which follows values such as building community, privacy, and algorithm-free recommendations before mainstream social media became filled with "the almighty algorithm." Guess which one I prefer? :D.

I'm active on Tumblr only because there's some cool (read: queer and neurodivergent) IE fandom people making cool things (individual sideblogs and events). I don't really want to post too much of my stuff here because I don't trust the company with my data—for privacy and AI-scrapping reasons specifically—and it's Web 2.0 design. I'm mostly active on the Fediverse, Mastodon and Dreamwidth for microblogging and blogging respectively about this silly soccer anime and other fandoms.
