Getting an Email from Proton Mail was a Mistake
About a couple of months ago I created a dedicated account with Proton Mail.
I had heard good things about it from small web hobbysts. It was secure, private, and widely used among the community.
Then not long after created an account with then, I noticed that their limits with free account were quickly too little for me.
You see, I use email in lieu of notifications. I get updates from AO3 fics I follow, mentions on Mastodon, and comments on DW and Pillowfort.
To organize these notifications, I have one folder for each site. Proton Mail offers three folders in the free but I have four sites?
But Mary, why don't you collapse two folders together? @&-#:=$: I don't want to!
Anyways that's issue #1.
Let's talk about labels. A Proton Mail free account allows for two labels. I use them as tag for actions. To Reply and Replied but this only applies to social aspects. I can't tag fic updates! Rawrrrr!!! (ᗒᗣᗕ)՞ Strike two.
Before using Proton Mail, I was having a good time sorting through my email with FairEmail, an open source email client. I could get emails addressed to my decades old account from Microsoft and Google and manage them without no problem.
Then when I moved to Proton Mail, lo and behold, I'm locked in! Can't use email clients aside from the official apps on mobile and web! And what's worse, to do so, I need to PAY!
In a way, this is even worse than Microsoft and Google, and that's saying a lot (눈_눈). It's like this whole thing about keeping teens out of the internet because it's "dangerous". Locked out is not the answer!
Anyways, this is my official non-recommendation of Proton Mail for small web folks. Imma ask for an email to the 32bit.cafe folks or pay for email hosting to Porkbun where I get my domain from. I'll write updates as the situation progresses.
