The Fastest Website I Have Ever Made (Ina11 Walker Translations Postmortem)
Yahoo, finished archiving all Ina11 Walker Translations, images and all! It was really fun! using Bearblog directly was really smooth and pleasant. I have a whole folder with the screenshots that I wanna share—
Wait wait, first write about the process.
- Create site
I went to my account over at bearblog.dev and created a new site. At first, I named it ina11translations but halfway through I noticed I hadn't been too specific so I renamed it arimamary-ina11walkertranslations. I have half a mind to rename it to simply ina11walkertranslations.
- Choose Theme
After creating the site, I went to the Themes tab to choose another theme. I ended up using "Writer"-can't really tell you why. I'm in the process of editing the CSS a bit to make it more IE-ish aka add a yellow color scheme.
- Get archiving
I opened Wattpad, went to my books and looked for the one with the translations.
For each, I created a new post in Bearblog, then I opened the translation, copied the contents and pasted them on Bearblog. Contents included the Title, last edited date, and text. Then, I opened all the images in the translation and downloaded then, giving each a unique name before saving. I created a folder for each volume and saved all images in its respective folder. Then, I uploaded each image, double checking with the preview so that they're in the correct place. Then, I hit publish.
To time myself, I used ToggleTrack and worked in twenty minute intervals max. Stopping after finishing each post.
I archived four or five post each day for a total workload of three days with sixteen posts uploaded (o▽o) .
I'm feeling pretty tired after writing all that. It may also be the hunger.
Anyways, after the first batch, I worked on the homepage. I knew I didn't want to use multiple pages so I removed all items from the Nav tab and added {{ posts }} on the Home tab so that it displayed all posts.
Then, after all the posts where done, I started editing the CSS to a yellow color scheme (WIP), edited the intro, added a footer and markup for the creative commons. This is honestly a community project (me for the IE community) and because both the translations and commentary are quite old, I don't feel attached to it in anyway. So I would rather people do with it whatever they want while respecting the copyright of the stuff that's not mine.
All in all, simplest website I have done so far! Ah yes, I still have to find a way to add a link to it from my website 🤔. Need a Projects page. And I also want to add a custom domain, ina11walkertranslations.arimamary.net me thinks.
That's all! Thanks for reading!
