Pillowfort Alternatives
For the masterlist.
Website Recs
Dreamwidth
- ๐๐ผ High entry barrier for someone without experience on LiveJournal. Read a bunch of guides that I collected on a Dreamwidth entry to have a good grasp on it like I was studying for an exam.
- โ Wide range of native customization features. Choose from an extensive range themes, edit the color scheme, pick and choose modules, or grab one of the themes made by fellow users (which may look more modern and designed for smaller screens).
- โ Solid tagging system. Works per journal, not sitewide.
- ๐๐ผ Takes effort to find people.
- Recommend to subscribe to people you meet on other sites and have an account here.
- Also post an intro and dig through @addme and/or @addme_fandom communities to meet new users.
- โ People are good with content warnings for triggering content, even on public and locked posts. You are likely to know what you're getting to.
- Serves primarily for longform text but some of the most active communities are around visual art.
- That said I'm sure they use another host for their images.
- Good for thoughtful discussions and posting long updates.
- Userbase skews older but there are some young people here and there.
- Banning is one way and doesn't hide your posts from the other person.
- While the site doesn't have particular stance against genAI, many community events ban them.
- โ โ ICONS!!! Fifteen on the free tier.
- Basic knowledge of HTML and/or Markdown is a plus. is a plus.
Fediverse
- ๐๐ผ High entry barrier for non-techies, even to use Mastodon.
- Extremelyimportant to choose a Mastodon server that follows the Mastodon Covenant and has good moderation.
- Some fannish servers include blorblo.social, fandom.ink, fandom.garden, and federatedfandom.net. Interested artist please check Wiki Scum guide. for more options.
- Mitigates a lot of downsides from Twitterlikes such as character limits (biggest I have seen is 10k).
- ๐๐ผ Even when following the above, people who primarily use twitterlikes (and have only experienced that sort of community (derogatory)) may use their accounts to vent about triggering and negative content without adding content warnings nor tags.
- โ Mastodon: Extensive filtering options for triggering content. It can take some work depending on the server you end up on.
- Personally recommend choosing topic-based servers over general servers for your particular interest/use.
- Exporting backups is okay. It's a process the first time.
- ๐๐ผ Moving between server is a process. Doesn't include posts as far as I know.
- ๐๐ผ Sharkey and Misskey are much more beginner-friendly Twitterlikes with much smaller userbase compared to Mastodon based on Japanese web design.
Bearblog.dev
- Blogging site without native comment sections.
- โ Free tier allows for one blog with general website making features like creating unlimited pages, posts, tags, and edit the styling. Nice templates to get you started.
- โ Paid tier is very generous, a (whopping ten blogs) and allows for uploading multimedia without much fuss.
- ๐๐ผ Strong recommendation for folks who write mostly text based posts, want to fiddle with CSS without the HTML, and play around with the basics of website making. And learn how to use Markdown.
- ๐๐ผ Low entry barrier.
- ๐๐ผ Active developer community offering themes and widgets to add to your blog.
- Export on Markdown format in both tiers. Well organized.
- โ Native RSS and Atom feeds.
- ๐๐ผ Bearblog Discover is it's blog aggregator. Free to browse but include paid accounts only.
- No app on stores if that's your thing. Works just fine on browser tho.
- You can create a microblog with a scrolling feed (example) similar to Tumblr/Dreamwidth/Pillowfort/Twitterlikes using this guide by Sylvia.
Websites Not Recommended and Why
- ๐๐ผ Meta products: Link suppression, poor moderation, algorithms that can't be turned off, plus no chronological feed, too many adds. Too much multimedia. Apps are spyware.
- ๐๐ผ Xitter: fascist anti-social pro-AI hellsite. Poor moderation. Small character limit. Doesn't even have RSS feeds!
- ๐๐ผ Tumblr (hellsite): terrible place to engage in community. People are mean for no reason. Poor moderation. Devs are transphobic. Tagging system for filtering purposes is hit or miss. Walking on eggshells on every post and interaction. Privacy features are either too public or too private. Official export SUCKS.
- ๐๐ผ Mastodon's flagship server mastodon.social has poor moderation and a lot of anti-social behavior.
- ๐๐ผ Bluesky: Poor moderation. Too mainstream. No content warnings feature. RSS feeds block NSFW content for people without an account and even when logged out ๐คฌ. No private accounts.
On my Fediverse instance + its rules
- Sakurajima.moe (Mastodon): Community Rules
- Pretty quiet and I like that. Most of the users I follow are on other instances.
- There's also a Misskey server at sakurajima.social which is more user friendly than Mastodon. Same rules apply.
